The author argues that the Missouri Compromise was repealed not because of a plot orchestrated by Democratic presidential candidate Stephen Douglas, as has been widely suggested by historians, but rather because of the efforts of Missouri Senator David R. Atchison and his allies. Atchison and his group, who were part of the radical wing of the Democratic party and had long regarded the Missouri Compromise restriction as unconstitutional, saw the repeal of the Compromise as essential to their political survival. The author's research suggests that a senatorial contest in Missouri was at the heart of the movement that led to the repeal of the Missouri Compromise, which in turn led to the tumultuous agitation threatening the integrity of the Union.
