Paperback. Etat : New. Print on Demand. This book examines the historical and theological evidence for St. Peter being the first Bishop of Rome, an event believed to be the catalyst for the transfer of the Primacy from Peter himself to the line of Roman Pontiffs who succeeded him. The author traces the historical arguments for and against Peter's Roman Episcopate from both early Christian sources and archaeological discoveries, exploring the relationship between the Episcopate and the Primacy in Catholic theology, and arguing that the Roman Episcopate was not intrinsically necessary for the legitimate succession of the Bishops of Rome to the Primacy but was chosen as the means of that transmission due to its association with Peter. The author also contends that the admission of Peter's Episcopate by non-Catholics should logically lead them to concede the truth of the Papal claims and by consequence to the acknowledgment of the Catholic Faith as a whole.
