Synopsis

A Hebrew New Testament for readers and scholars.

This edition presents a carefully constructed Hebrew translation of the New Testament, designed to function as a reading book for Jews and as a foundational part of future worship among Israel’s people.

The work emphasizes Hebrew thought and expression as its guiding approach, arguing that the translation should stay faithful to the Hebrew tradition and illuminate the New Testament as a continuation of the biblical text. It also explains the translator’s methods, discusses where Hebrew readers might differ from Greek or Latin sources, and places the translation within a broader scholarly and historical context. Along with the translation, the book offers scholarly notes and discussion of linguistic choices, aiming to clarify how the Hebrew text conveys meaning and intention in a modern reading context.

  • Insights into translation decisions and how Hebrew grammar and style shape the text
  • Discussion of key terms and their scriptural and traditional relevance
  • Appendices and essays related to translation work and its historical development
  • Context for readers interested in the Jewish reception of the New Testament

Ideal for students, scholars, and readers curious about how the New Testament can be read through a Hebrew linguistic and theological lens.

Présentation de l'éditeur

Excerpt from The Hebrew New Testament of the British and Foreign Bible Society: A Contribution to Hebrew Philology

Some one will ask me, why have you written this in English. In truth, I myself do not know. I did so without premeditation, driven instinctively by the gratitude which I owe to the English publishers and patrons of my Hebrew New Testament.

And should one ask, what is the aim of these pages, I answer: firstly, they will afford a glimpse into the work, of which the Hebrew N. T. is the fruit. Secondly, they show what instructive results have proceeded there-from for Hebrew grammar, especially syntax.
