Synopsis

Excerpt from A Munster Twilight

With which shall I begin - man or place? Perhaps I had better first tell of the man; of him the incident left so withered that no sooner had I laid eyes on him than I said Here is one whose blood at some terrible moment of his life stood still, stood still and never after wards regained its quiet, old-time ebb-and-?ow. A word or two then about the place - a sculped-out shell in the Kerry mountains, an evil-looking place, green glaring like a sea when a storm has passed. To connect man and place together, even as they worked one with the other to bring the tragedy about, ought not then to be so difficult.

I had gone into those desolate treeless hills searching after the traces of an old-time Gaelic family that once were lords of them. But in this mountainy glen I forgot my purpose almost as soon as I entered it.

Paperback. Etat : New. Print on Demand. This book explores the dark underbelly of Irish rural life in the late 19th century. The author weaves a captivating narrative that delves into the complexities of human nature, exploring themes of superstition, vengeance, and the corrosive effects of isolation. The story unfolds through the eyes of a nameless observer, drawn into the enigmatic world of a remote Kerry farm where a brooding tragedy has taken root. The tale hinges on the tragic figure of Liam Ruadh, a simple man driven to madness by the obsessive desire of his master to plough the sacred land known as Leaca-na-Naomh. The author skillfully intertwines the story of Liam Ruadh with the tale of Jim Daunt, a sailor who returns to his native Cork, only to find himself entangled in a web of violence and suspicion, reminding readers of the dangers of isolation and the fragility of human connection. The book ultimately offers a haunting commentary on the enduring power of the past, demonstrating how the weight of history can shape the lives of even the most seemingly ordinary individuals.
