Explore the sources of thought and how we know what we know. This rigorous yet accessible volume surveys major ideas about how the mind forms concepts, how judgment works, and where universal ideas come from. It clarifies debates sparked by Locke, Bossuet, Kant, and the Scottish school, and explains Rosmini’s responses in plain terms.
This edition presents Rosmini’s analysis of how reason, perception, and logic interlock, and why questions about universals matter for philosophy today. It traces the distinction between senses and understanding, then maps how the mind organizes possibility, existence, and necessity into a single core idea. The discussion stays focused on the premises and implications, without assuming prior expertise.
What you’ll experience
- A clear look at how ideas originate and how judgments validate them
- A guided tour through central debates about perception, knowledge, and universals
- Plain explanations of complex concepts, with a steady emphasis on logic and method
- A framework for understanding how different philosophers have shaped the idea of thinking
Ideal for readers of philosophy who want a grounded, readable map of early modern thought and its enduring questions.

Excerpt from The Origin of Ideas, Vol. 1
I. Rosmini's Nuovo Saggio, or Treatise on the Origin of Ideas, was first published by Salviucci of Rome, in 1830, during the pontificate, and under the auspices, of Pope Pius VIII. It may be claimed that this work had the sanction, directly or indirectly, of five Popes. Pius VII., in 1823, urged Rosmini to apply himself diligently to the studies which led him to plan and begin it in 1825. Leo XII. encouraged him to proceed with those studies. Pius VIII. stimulated him to the same end, and lived to see the first edition published with the imprimatur of the Master of the Sacred Apostolic Palace. Gregory XVI. (a warm personal friend of the author) welcomed a new edition of it in 1836-8; and three other editions appeared, with full ecclesiastical approval, during the pontificate of Plus IX. To meet the wishes of many in our own country, where philosophical studies are steadily gaining ground, the present translation has been made from the fifth Italian edition, which appeared in 1851, carefully revised by the author.
No sooner had the first edition of the Nuovo Saggio been published than it produced a deep impression on the minds of Italian thinkers, who were not slow to acknowledge that its author had established a right to be deemed a great philosopher, many of them going so far as to proclaim him the greatest philosopher of the age.

Paperback. Etat : New. Print on Demand. This book is a profound examination of the origin of human knowledge and consciousness. The author, a renowned philosopher, delves into the realm of metaphysics to explore the fundamental nature of human reasoning and the sources of our ideas. Through a rigorous analysis of key philosophical systems throughout history, from Plato and Aristotle to Kant and Hegel, the book challenges established assumptions and prevailing theories. The author postulates that all human cognition stems from a single, universal principleâ"the Light of Reasonâ"an innate, objective, and immutable source of knowledge. By exploring this principle, the book seeks to establish a solid foundation for philosophy and restore its significance as a guide to truth and understanding. Its insights offer a profound understanding of the origins and nature of human thought, making it an invaluable resource for philosophers, scholars, and anyone interested in the foundational principles of knowledge and consciousness.
