It is a source of great gratification to the Author of this volume, that it has now reached a Sixth Edition. It was at first put forth with fear and trembling, yet not without hope; but the favour with which it has been received, has exceeded the writers most sanguine dreams. It has found its way to the drawing room of the merchant, as well as to the humbler fireside of the labouring man. That it has shed some kindly influence wherever it has passed, is the authors sincere and earnest hope; and the knowledge that it had done so, would be his richest and highest reward. He is not by any means vain enough to suppose that the success of these efi usions is owing to their merits as compositions, but rather to that spuit of hope, peace, and conciliation, which he conscientiously endeavoured to infuse into them. Hoping that the few original poems added in this edition, may be found acceptable, he subscribes himself the readers grateful servant, THE AUTHOE. Hyde, January 1st, 1857. PREFACE TO THE FOURTH EDITION. In the year 1841 this little work was put forth by the Author with fear and trembling, with uncertainty as to its fitness for the public eye. It is gratifying to remember, that its appearance attracted immediate attention in the neighbourhood of its publication. Warmly commended by a few generous and intellectual friends, and encouragingly noticed by the public journals, both in this country and in A merica, it gained a popularity wliich far exceeded the Author sexpectations. Not the least flattering of its results, are, the kindly aid and good will which have been extended to him, by gentlemen whose rank, benevolence, and genius, have given them an elevated and influential position in society. A combination of these favourable cu cumstances, perhaps, rather than any commanding merit in the Author sefi usions, has brought the work to a Fourth Edition.
