Paperback. Etat : New. Print on Demand. This book explores the principles by which British administrations were formed from the mid-18th century onwards. The author argues that the opaque and unaccountable way in which administrations were established and dismissed from office represented a serious weakness in the British constitution and offered substantial opportunities for corruption. The author uses two specific examples to illustrate their point: the 1801 appointment of Henry Addington, and his subsequent dismissal to make way for the return of William Pitt in 1804. The author contends that the method of Addingtonâs removal was as questionable and unconstitutional as had been the manner of his original appointment, and illustrates the dangers that existed in leaving so much power in the hands of the monarch. As such, this book will be of great interest to constitutional historians, and is a valuable contribution to our understanding of the British constitution during the period.
