Xnttottctfon. Though, in the following Poem, I have adhered strictly to the outline in Scripture, I have availed myself of whatever appeared to my purpose in the profane historians. My general authorities, where I do not follow the Book of Daniel, are Herodotus and Diodorous Siculus; but, perhaps, the best English account of Babylon is to be found in Prideaux s Connection of the Old and New Testament. The publication of the Martyr of Antioch was considerably delayed by unforeseen circumstances. I take the liberty of mentioning this for two reasons.
