Excerpt from The Sacred Vestments: An English Rendering of the Third Book of the ''Rationale Divinorum Officiorum'' of Durandus, Bishop of Mende
What herein follows is an attempt in part to supply this defect. In making it I have felt that should the work fail to find readers (which would appear unlikely in days when the mind of all England is strained upon matters litur gical) the blame will attach to the inefficient interpreter, not to the pious and gifted author, of an illustrious book.

Neale and Webb s Symbolism, which is an edited translation of its first Book Of the Church and its Parts, the eight Books of the Rationale Divinorum Officiorum of Durandus have not, so far as I know, been rendered into English. This means that the greatest and most beautiful, perhaps, of ancient works on the worship of the Catholic Church is inaccessible to any but readers of the Latin tongue.

This book was originally published prior to 1923, and represents a reproduction of an important historical work, maintaining the same format as the original work. While some publishers have opted to apply OCR (optical character recognition) technology to the process, we believe this leads to sub-optimal results (frequent typographical errors, strange characters and confusing formatting) and does not adequately preserve the historical character of the original artifact. We believe this work is culturally important in its original archival form. While we strive to adequately clean and digitally enhance the original work, there are occasionally instances where imperfections such as blurred or missing pages, poor pictures or errant marks may have been introduced due to either the quality of the original work or the scanning process itself. Despite these occasional imperfections, we have brought it back into print as part of our ongoing global book preservation commitment, providing customers with access to the best possible historical reprints. We appreciate your understanding of these occasional imperfections, and sincerely hope you enjoy seeing the book in a format as close as possible to that intended by the original publisher.

Paperback. Etat : New. Print on Demand. This book delves into the rich symbolism and historical significance of the vestments worn by clergy in the Catholic Church. Rooted in ancient traditions and drawing inspiration from both the Old and New Testaments, each vestment holds profound meaning, representing virtues and spiritual truths. The author explores the origins and evolution of these garments, tracing their connection to the vestments of the Old Testament priesthood and the practices of the early Christian church. This book delves into the symbolism of each vestment, explaining how they reflect the qualities and responsibilities of those who wear them. The amice, for example, symbolizes the helmet of salvation and chastity, while the alb represents purity and the mortification of the flesh. The stole signifies obedience and the yoke of Christ, and the chasuble embodies charity and the garment of Christ's love. Beyond their symbolic significance, the vestments also serve as reminders of the spiritual battles that priests and bishops face. The author draws parallels between the vestments and the armor of God described by the Apostle Paul, emphasizing the importance of inner virtue and outward action in the fight against evil. By understanding the profound symbolism and historical context of these garments, readers gain a deeper appreciation for the beauty and significance of the Catholic liturgy. This book's insights into the meaning of sacred vestments illuminate the timeless connection between the visible and the invisible, the material and the spiritual, in the worship of God.
