This event, put on by the Union Veteran Legion, Encampment No. III, included a patriotic medley by the 13th U.S. Cavalry Band, as well as a reading of "O Captain! My Captain!" by Col. John Tweedale, U.S.A. and a song by Prof. Jasper Dean McFall and Miss McFall. The main event was a speech discussing the life and character of Lincoln. Given by the famed Senator, John M. Thurston of Nebraska, he spoke about Lincoln's virtues, his strength, and his belief in an overruling power that guided the destiny of nations and men. The Senator spoke about those who had fought in the war, defending their country and their beliefs, mentioning the horrors of war but also highlighting the courage of men who fought for what they believed in, both North and South. The book also includes the speech given by the Honorable William Jennings Bryan, an oration on the life, career, and character of Abraham Lincoln. Along with discussing Lincoln's eloquence and his place as one of the greatest orators in the country's history, he also highlights Lincoln's role as a statesman and executive, one who understood the American people, their principles, and the issues of the day, and who could look ahead and make predictions, such as his famous quote: "A house divided against itself shall not stand." Bryan spoke on Lincoln's moral courage and his love of his fellow man, regardless of their political leanings, and concluded by stating that Lincoln's greatness came not from himself but from the virtues and ideals that his life represented.
