Whatever value this book may have is due to the fact that-it is the plain story of a plain man, told in his own words. I had often listened to his stories with pleasure, and at last persuaded him to write them down, and it is but just to him to say that my task as editor has been confined to cutting out some yarns which, however suitable to the leisure of the forecastle, would have taken up too much space in print.
