As I have reason to believe that the most important of my despatches from Upper Canada were, contrary to usual custom, submitted for the decision of the Cabinet, I am perfectly sensible that the publication of this volume must draw upon me the whole force of the Government. Paperback. Etat : New. Print on Demand. This book examines the political events in Upper Canada that led to the Rebellion of 1837 and the dispatches sent from the Lieutenant Governor to the Colonial Secretary during that period. The author was appointed to the position in 1835 and tasked with resolving tensions between the colony and Britain. He found a volatile climate of grievances and dissatisfaction, compounded by outside agitators intent on revolution. The book traces the deterioration of the relationship, the author's attempts to address resident grievances while navigating orders from London, and the buildup to open rebellion, highlighting the consequences of miscommunication and differing perspectives. The insights provided in this book remain relevant in understanding the challenges of colonial governance and the importance of addressing grievances before they escalate into conflict.
