Paperback. Etat : New. Print on Demand. This book tells the tale of Indian Native Rulers and the position they occupy in the Empire of Great Britain. Contrary to popular belief of the day, the Native States are not relics of Indian principalities that existed before the British conquest. Instead, they are byproducts of the struggle for the fragments of the Mogul Empire that occurred after Aurangzib's death in 1707. The author, an expert on the subject, challenges the perception that the British destroyed Indian political organizations. In fact, where autonomous political systems persist, it is thanks to British intervention. The text gives examples of this. Many of the larger Native States are of two classes: those with a high degree of independence and control, and those that are internally more democratic. The text also explores the role of the political officer, a British official who has the delicate task of assisting the rulers of the Native States in their duties and responsibilities. The book also examines the question of internal administration of Native States, which is inextricably linked to the quality of the personnel of the officers deputed to assist the rulers. The presence of outsiders brought from British Districts to apply British systems of administration and of sharp pleaders learned in the law is deplored by the author. Instead, they suggest that native officials should be encouraged to learn the British system in their own provinces. The author concludes by noting the progress and improvement in nearly every large Native State. The old plan of farming land revenue has given place to the organized system of survey and settlement and the administration of justice has also greatly improved.
