Paperback. Etat : New. Print on Demand. This book presents a celebratory memorial oration honoring the life of David L. Swain, a revered figure in the history of North Carolina. The oration was originally delivered by the author, Zebulon Vance, then Governor of North Carolina, at the annual commencement ceremony of the University of North Carolina in 1878. The orator recounts Swain's humble beginnings in the mountains of North Carolina and traces his rise to prominence as a lawyer, politician, and eventually president of the University of North Carolina. Swain's many accomplishments are highlighted, including his role in the construction of the French Broad Turnpike and his service as a judge on the Superior Court. The author delves into Swain's character, emphasizing his integrity, industry, and commitment to education. Swain's efforts to improve the state's educational system and his dedication to the preservation of North Carolina's history are also explored. The oration concludes by reflecting on Swain's legacy and his lasting impact on North Carolina. The author asserts that Swain's contributions to the state in the areas of law, politics, and education have left an enduring mark and continue to shape North Carolina's identity.
