This book charts the 7000-mile journey of a missionary as they travel across America to the Bering Sea coast of the desolate and remote Alaskan territories. This extraordinary account describes the journey, beginning in 1902, through territories and provinces that were still untamed and isolated from the rest of the world. Local Indigenous tribes, frontier settlements, and the challenges of a changing nation on the cusp of great industrial advancements are explored through the author's unique lens as they travel towards their destination and the people they would come to serve. The text gives a unique insight into the social, racial, and class-based challenges of the time, with a focus on the grandeur of the untamed American landscape, the breadth of its unique societal characteristics, and the vast changes that would be ushered in the coming century.

This volume embodies the substance of various articles which appeared in the London Month and the Canadian Messenger. To these some new matter has been addedy and the whole has been recast and thrown into a more permanent form. If its pages, on which the author spent some of the long winter nights in his Alaskan cabin, should bring to his readers even a tithe of the pleasure which they afforded him in the writing, their purpose will have been amply served.
