It is merely a personal history an effort to recall a few of the less-known figures that moved and had their being in France, in the first half of the sixteenth century. My best thanks are due to Mr. J. G. Ritchie for the help he has given me in making my Historical Summary ;and also to Mr. Henry Newbolt, editor of the Monthly Review1 ,for his kindness in allowing me to reprint part of Chapter XVII from an article (T he Religion of Rabelais )which appeared in the number of that periodical for December, 1900. M. de Maulde snew boolc, Les Femmes de la Renaissance, which (though written from a very different point of view) covers much the same period as my own, unfortunately appeared some time after I had written my volume too late for me to profit by its store of information.

Paperback. Etat : New. Print on Demand. This book explores the French Renaissance and its effects on French women. It depicts a time of change and excitement, when the rediscovery of classical texts and the growth of humanism led to the revival of the arts and sciences, and ignited a passion for beauty and knowledge. This period is often portrayed as one of 'masculine' achievement, and the role of women has often been overlooked. This book seeks to redress this by examining the remarkable contributions of women to the intellectual and social movements of the time. The author shows us that women were not silent muses or mere objects to be painted, but creative individuals who engaged with the big ideas and cultural innovations of their day and were influential in their own right. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format.
