The author of the following essay has asked me to furnish it with an introduction ;and I am very glad to do so, as I think it likely to prove a novel and suggestive contribution to meditation on the great theme with which it deals. There has been a strong reaction of late years against the mode of regarding eternal punishment, which has been dominant, though not universal, in the Christian Church from a very early age; on the ground that, when thought out, it would seem to be incompatible with the Christian conviction, not only of the love, but also of the justice of God ;while the notion, that this particular form of doctrine was an essential article of the Christian faith, has been a fruitful source of unbelief in many minds. But, under the influence of this reaction, a vague kind of universalism has arisen, which equally contradicts our ethical instincts; by practically obliterating all distinction between the future of the righteous and the wicked, and thus depriving our moral probation in the present life of its significance. Moreover, when we examine the teaching of the New Testament upon the subject, we find that, though far from affording any countenance to the latter opinion, it yet cannot be construed into an explicit statement of the former.

Paperback. Etat : New. Print on Demand. This book delves into the enduring mystery of eternal judgment, a foundational concept within Christianity yet one that has sparked centuries of debate and often been shrouded in ambiguity. The author challenges the traditional interpretation of this doctrine, suggesting that a shift in perspective is needed to truly understand its meaning. Drawing inspiration from the Old Testament, the author analyzes the role of judges in the Book of Judges and other biblical texts, demonstrating how these figures serve as archetypes for Christ's own role as a savior-judge. This interpretation emphasizes the continuous, life-long nature of Christ's judgment, suggesting that he is not solely a judge who punishes in the afterlife, but a merciful and compassionate redeemer whose judgment is an integral part of his ongoing salvation. Through a detailed analysis of biblical types and themes, the author reveals a more complex and nuanced understanding of God's judgment, one that challenges conventional notions of eternal punishment and offers a vision of hope and restoration.
