Synopsis

This book follows Peter Stevenson, a commonplace man living a simple life with his family, until the doctor reveals his daughter Helen May is seriously ill and needs to escape to a dry climate to recover, like New Mexico or Colorado. With his meager savings, Peter purchases a claim to a homestead in New Mexico, and secures his daughter's future by taking out a life insurance policy with himself as the beneficiary. Soon after, he passes away and Helen May and her brother Vic must come to terms with their loss, and their new life on their homestead claim. Will they be able to navigate the challenges of life on their own, learn to live off the land, and build a new life in the unforgiving desert, all while honoring their father's final wishes? This heart-wrenching tale explores themes of loss, resilience, and the power of family bonds, and offers poignant insights into the human will to survive.
