Paperback. Etat : New. Print on Demand. This book chronicles The Siege and Evacuation of Boston, an event of considerable historical import. By 1775, there was wide discontent with the British Navigation Lawsâ stranglehold on commerce in colonies led by merchants, men of property, and a population steeped in the political philosophy of the Puritans. When the British responded to this unrest with The Boston Port Bill, which decimated their economy, a wave of sympathy surged across the American Colonies. Neighboring towns and even far-flung, loosely connected settlements sent an outpouring of food, money, and supplies to their beleaguered brothers. The author argues, New England became the heart of the Revolution because this colonial backwater was already ideologically prepared for a struggle to preserve legal rights against overreaching executive power, and because the response to their suffering forged a bond of sympathy and necessity between the disparate colonies. They understood that the siege of Boston was, in fact, a siege of American Liberty itself. While the outcome of the military conflict was far from certain, this act of solidarity and the courage of the militia who held out against the British ensured that the question of American independence was not a matter of if but when.
