Paperback. Etat : New. Print on Demand. This book begins by narrating the author's early life, beginning with his parents' courtship and marriage and ending with his departure for college. He was born into a wealthy merchant family but his father failed just before the author's birth and was forced to leave the country. The author's mother had little choice but to stay behind and raise her three children while being supported financially by her mother. She died unexpectedly when the author and his brother were between 8 and 10 years old. Their grandmother brought them up until she was forced by poverty to enter a workhouse, where she died. The author himself spent nearly twenty years in college, as was customary in the 18th century. The author provides a rich tableau of 18th-century English life, from the aristocracy to the impoverished and from the religious to the secular.
