It will be Observed that in Part III. Of this volume, which contains a review Of the theories that have been proposed as substitutes for the Catholic doctrine of the Atonement, I have to a considerable extent availed myself of the substance of several lectures which I published some years ago. Should any apology be deemed necessary for so doing, I may state that I have been repeatedly and earnestly urged to republish these lectures in an enlarged and separate form - apart from that controversy respect ing the Fatherhood of God with which they were originally connected. Indeed, the gratifying reception which they have met with, and the desire which has been frequently expressed for their enlarge ment and republication, have been the chief induce ments which prevailed with me to undertake the present work, with which they are now incorporated.
