A concise, illuminating portrait of Synesius of Cyrene, a philosopher‑bishop who helped shape a pivotal era.
This non-fiction study situates Synesius in the early fifth century, tracing how his education, travels, and shifting duties intersect with the political and religious currents of his time. It examines his journey from philosopher to bishop‑elect and his later efforts as a working church leader, set against the broader history of the Roman world and the Christian Church.
Ideal for readers of late antique history, philosophy, and church history seeking a clear, accessible introduction to a key figure of the era.

This book was originally published prior to 1923, and represents a reproduction of an important historical work, maintaining the same format as the original work. While some publishers have opted to apply OCR (optical character recognition) technology to the process, we believe this leads to sub-optimal results (frequent typographical errors, strange characters and confusing formatting) and does not adequately preserve the historical character of the original artifact. We believe this work is culturally important in its original archival form. While we strive to adequately clean and digitally enhance the original work, there are occasionally instances where imperfections such as blurred or missing pages, poor pictures or errant marks may have been introduced due to either the quality of the original work or the scanning process itself. Despite these occasional imperfections, we have brought it back into print as part of our ongoing global book preservation commitment, providing customers with access to the best possible historical reprints. We appreciate your understanding of these occasional imperfections, and sincerely hope you enjoy seeing the book in a format as close as possible to that intended by the original publisher.

Raised in an era of social, political, and religious upheaval in the waning Roman Empire, Synesius is presented as a man of his times, influenced both by pagan Neoplatonic philosophy then in vogue, and by the emergent Christian ethos. The author examines Synesius' role as a political and social commentator through his philosophical and literary works, revealing his struggles with contemporary issues such as oppression, corruption, and barbarian invasions. As a representative example, the book delves into Synesius' embassy to Constantinople to plead for his beleaguered province, showcasing his diplomatic skills and his courage in confronting imperial injustices.
