Excerpt from A System of Elocution: With Special Reference to Gesture, to the Treatment of Stammering, and Defective Articulation
The part on gesture is extracted, principally, from Austin''s Chironomia, a work which is extremely rare, and one whose great size and expense are insuperable obstacles to its general introduction. All, however, that is particularly valuable, which the Chironomia con tains on the subject of gesture, is here presented to the reader in the compass of a few pages. Austin''s system of notation of gesture is of great practical utility. This will appear evident to the reader when he shall have learned that, by its application, all the gestures which an orator makes, in the delivery of a discourse, may be accurately recorded for his own practice and improvement, as well as for the benefit of posterity.

This book delves into the art of Elocution, a discipline that was highly valued in the 18th and 19th centuries for its ability to cultivate effective communication. The author explores the principles of vocal delivery, emphasizing the importance of proper articulation, pitch, force, and time. The text also examines gesture, drawing heavily on the work of the renowned gesture theorist, Austin. The bookââ â¢s approach is deeply rooted in the belief that mastering Elocution is not just about speaking clearly but also about expressing emotion and meaning through voice and body language. The author emphasizes the need for a systematic approach to vocal training, advocating for a type of ââ Å"vocal gymnasticsââ  that can strengthen the vocal organs and address common impediments like stammering. Through a combination of theoretical instruction and practical exercises, the book equips readers with the tools to improve their reading and speaking skills, ultimately becoming more engaging and persuasive communicators.
