There can be no dispute as to the value of genuine criticism, and as to its great services in recent times. Much light has been thrown by it, on both the Old and New Testaments, in our own day. The increase of knowledge in all directions, which is a most marked feature of our age, has given new interest to many portions of the Scriptures. Even the assaults of opponents have resulted in advantage in this respect, as when Neander wrote his Life of Christ in answer to Strauss sbook, and Archdeacon Farrar, Dr. Geikie, and the late Dr. Edersheim made researches and gave new vividness to the minute events of our Lord shistory, in consequence partly of the book of Renan and others of similar spirit. Healthy criticism has done much in our days to vivify both the Old and New Testaments. More attention is now paid than formerly to the characteristics of the various writers, and to the special circumstances under which they wrote; while we have much greater knowledge of the countries and of the manners and customs of the people. Genuine criticism, with its wide researches and investigations, is invaluable.

Paperback. Etat : New. Print on Demand. This book provides an invigorating analysis of the controversial 'higher criticism' of the Old Testament. The author argues that much higher criticism is based on the assumption that no God could exist and that miracles and prophecies are impossible. Using the Pentateuch as their starting point, higher critics have sought to deconstruct the Old Testament by cutting books into fragments and upending their historical contexts. However, the author argues that this criticism ignores the consistent divine and miraculous themes woven throughout the Old Testament, making such a reconstruction impossible. They also ignore the vast archaeological and historical evidence supporting the Bible's narrative. The author further argues that the moral and literary impossibilities embedded in higher criticism make it untenable. The author concludes that to reject the supernatural is to reject the very foundation of the Old Testament and, with it, the entire Christian faith.
