Caroline was accused of adultery against her husband King George IV (then Prince Regent). The accusations were proven unfounded and she was ultimately exonerated by the House of Lords, but not before she had been subjected to much public scrutiny and scorn. Many people of the day believed that because of her foreign birth (she was German), she was not fit to be Queen. The author of these stanzas was wholly opposed to this view and penned some very evocative and passionate poetry in her defense. The work can be seen as a compelling historical record of the era, and it provides a valuable insight into the political and social climate of the time. It also exemplifies the very personal and human story of one woman, whose strength and resilience are still relevant and inspiring today.
