The author, who refers to him or herself with the nom de plume Smectymnuus, engages in a debate with the moderator of the General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church over the morality and religious implications of slavery. Fiercely critical of the pro-slavery views of the moderator, the author argues that all forms of slavery are immoral and un-Christian and should be abolished without delay. Written in response to the pro-slavery views of some members of the Presbyterian Church in the mid-19th century, the author's clarion call for the abolition of slavery based on Christian principles is still relevant today.
