During his tenure as Alcalde (judge) of the Northern District of California, Sutter oversaw military defense of the territory, negotiated treaties with Native American tribes, and purchased Fort Ross from the Russian-American Company. The acquisition of this valuable property included a brass cannon, now enshrined in the collection of the California Pioneers in San Francisco. This book further chronicles Sutter's early acquisition of large tracts of land through dubious land grants, his efforts to build an agricultural and commercial empire, and his role in the Mexican-American War.
