Excerpt from Protestantism and Progress: A Historical Study of the Relation of Protentantism to the Modern World
The publishers of the English translation of this little book Of mine have requested me to write a special preface addressed to the English reader, and I have very willingly consented to do so. The purpose of such a preface can only be, I think, to say a word about the place which this book occupies in relation to my work as a whole, and, as it would argue a want of modesty in me to assume that the latter is widely known, brie?y to indicate its general character.

Paperback. Etat : New. Print on Demand. This book traces Protestantism's relationship to broader historical and social developments, arguing Protestantism's impact on society has been understated. The author contends that Protestantism's rise coincided with the decline of authoritarian, religious rule in Europe. This decline initiated a shift toward valuing individual autonomy, secularism, and scientific inquiry. While acknowledging Protestantism's Protestant Reformation roots in medieval Church culture, the author emphasizes how it fostered individualism, rationalism, and a belief in progress. The book highlights Protestantism's role in shaping the modern world, arguing that the Protestant emphasis on personal conviction, combined with the authority of scientific reasoning, shaped the social, political, and economic systems of the West.
