Paperback. Etat : New. Print on Demand. This book delves into the complex history of the doctrine of atonement, tracing its development from the earliest Christian writings to the influential works of Anselm of Canterbury. The author meticulously examines Anselm's seminal treatise, "Cur Deus Homo!", which dramatically shifted the theological landscape by introducing the concept of satisfaction as the primary explanation for Christ's sacrifice. The author highlights how Anselm's theory diverges from the patristic teaching that emphasized the Incarnation as the central act of redemption, and how it paved the way for the Reformation's emphasis on penal substitution. The book goes on to explore the ramifications of Anselm's theory, demonstrating its enduring influence on Western Christian thought and illuminating the enduring tension between legalistic and more spiritual interpretations of Christ's redemptive work. Through a thorough exploration of historical and theological contexts, this book sheds light on the ongoing debate surrounding the nature of atonement and its implications for Christian faith.
