The present work seeks to trace the history of the different movements for reform in the system and in the doctrine of the Catholic Church, which occupy a prominent place in the interest and significance of the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries. Except so far as it deals with the life and writings of Wyclifle and with the controversial literature of the age preceding his, it makes no pretension, to original treatment. In the earlier chapters I have been permitted to embody the substance of several passages in my Illustrations of the History of Medieval Thought published in 1884 by the liberality of the Hibbert Trustees; and in the latter part of the book I am under large obligations to the works of Professors Creighton, Loserth, and Maurenbrecher.
