The author, writing in 17th-century England, argues that a person's works are more important than their profession of faith. He divides the sermon into four main points: 1) Men may profess the true religion and yet lead very ill lives; 2) That they who do so, by just interpretation, may be said to deny the religion they profess; 3) Whence it is, that men should make profession of a religion, to which the temper of their spirits and the course of their walking are so repugnant; 4) The vanity of such a profession, and how little it signifies to entitle persons to the reputation or proper rewards of such a religion. The author concludes by emphasizing that God will judge people according to their actions, not their professions. This book is significant because it offers a timeless reminder of the importance of living in accordance with one's professed beliefs.
