Présentation de l'éditeur

The Making of Deloney as a Novelist. I. The known facts about Deloney slife )are so scanty and his ventures in prose and verse have been examined so little as yet that the course of his literary development lies in open view only here and there. For the connections one has to resort to conjecture. In doing so, to be sure, there is little or no conflicting evidence to deal with, at least not so far as the limited scope of the present enquiry is concerned. The glimpse Thomas Nash gives of Deloney about four years before his death presents him as a silk-weaver by calling and more reprehensible still a prolific maker of ballads. Retribution has been meted out to him, however. His looms are silent, and the carded ale to which the deare yeare of 1596 has reduced him inspires merry ditties no longer.) 1) See article Deloney, Diet. Nat. Paperback. Etat : New. Print on Demand. This book offers an accessible scholarly introduction to Thomas Deloney, a well-known Elizabethan prose writer and the author of three popular prose works in the late sixteenth century. His most famous work, 'The Gentle Craft', is a collection of prose narratives mainly concerned with the lives of members of London's shoemakers guild, and was clearly intended to celebrate the craft. The book is significant in its day for its realistic fictional elements, which were considered innovative for the time. It also signaled a shift in the focus of literature from courtly and aristocratic concerns toward the lives and interests of ordinary people. Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work.
