Excerpt from Nell Gwyn
The orange-sellers were a great feature of the theatre in the days of Charles II. They stood in front of the pit with their backs to the stage and cried their wares in the inter vals of the performance. Often the young men in the pit chaffed them and they were expected to chaff back. Their profits were considerable, for it was thought disgraceful for a gentleman to haggle about prices, and a pretty girl with a ready tongue could gen orally make her own terms.

Paperback. Etat : New. Print on Demand. This book reveals Nelly Gwyn as she was, not as myth and legend have portrayed her. She was a woman of humble origin, born into a brothel and trafficked into the world of theater that raised her to prominence, from a lowly orange seller to an acclaimed stage actress and the mistress of King Charles II. The author paints a vivid picture of her world, from the raucous playhouses filled with rowdy gallants to the scandalous court of the pleasure-loving king. While acknowledging the gaps in the historical record, this book nevertheless reconstructs a complex portrait of the woman at its centerâ"a woman of wit, humor, and ambition, whose life remains fascinating over three centuries later. Through the story of Nell Gwyn, this book not only unearths the truth of one remarkable woman's life but sheds new light on Restoration England and the world of theater that flourished within it.
