Tbob two first of the little works included in this volume, viz., the Salmon and the Fox, have already been published. The flattering reception accorded to them by the public, and the favourable criticisms bestowed upon them in papers and periodicals in which I could hardly have expected to find them noticed, have encouraged me to offer them with additional matter, in a collective form, aided by illustrations by Cecil Boult. The object of each story is the same, my purpose throughout being to convey some facts in Natural History in a form less didactic, and perhaps more palatable, than the stiff, statistical, quasi-scientific style commonly adopted. That I have succeeded to some extent I cannot but be conscious; for acknowledgments highly appreciated by me have been spontaneously rendered by readers of both sexes, and, I am glad to say, by some of very tender years. h.
