The Wars of the Roses one of the most brutal struggles in our history are remarkable for the fact that they caused little suffering or distress to the great body of the people. While the nobles and their retainers were engaged in savage fighting, ordinary citizens carried on their work as usual, not greatly caring whether the Red Rose or the White proved victorious, and for the most part quite untouched by the war. The following pages deal mainly with the home life of a simple tradesman and his family at a time when the darkness of the Middle A ges was yielding before the dawn of the New Learning, a movement in which the art of printing was to have so important a share.

Paperback. Etat : New. Print on Demand. This book offers a vivid vignette of life in late-Medieval England during the Wars of the Roses conflict between rival factions of York and Lancaster. The author places the focus on the home life of a simple tradesman and his family, the Tankervilles. Ralph, the young protagonist, epitomizes the courage and desperation of the civilian population during a time of bitter strife. Against the backdrop of his father's absence at war and the death of his mother, Ralph's earlier life as a young noble, accustomed to privilege and entitlement, sharply contrasts with his present circumstances. Now forced by harsh realities to accept the protection of his uncle, a staunch Yorkist, Ralph must come to terms with the loss of his former status and adapt to the company of tradesmen. The narrative highlights the depth of social division that characterized the era and explores how ordinary people struggled to navigate the complexities of divided loyalties and personal safety during these turbulent times. The book subtly underscores the essential humanity of its characters, their resilience, and the ways in which their lives are shaped and tested by a society riven by civil war.
