The author, who was a minister, found that a majority of church members were not giving towards their church and its missions, and that of those who did, many were not giving regularly. The author argues that the common practice of loosely collecting donations is not Christian, and that, to remedy this, the church needs a ministry beyond its ordained clergy, one where all members contribute to the work of the church in a regular, systematic manner. While the book's specific advice pertains to early 20th century church practices, its broader message on the importance of stewardship and participation in the financial life of the church remains resonant.
