A mong many of the clergy with whose general conception of religion I find myself most in sym pathy, there appears to be an unhappy absence of teaching about the Sacraments, which may be due in part to the lack of clear perception as to their exact nature and functions, and in part to a fear of assisting what they regard as the disproportionate emphasis which is assigned to them in some quarters. Through indifference to the necessity of definite instruction we Evangelicals have failed to encourage the intelligent use of the Sacraments, and must admit our share of responsibility for the prevalent aloofness from sacramental religion.
