This book traces the transformation of the Medieval Floral Games of Toulouse into the College of the Art and Science of Rhetoric in the 16th century and the lasting impact of the Rhetoricians on the organization. The author points out the strong influence of the Rhetoricians of the north on the reorganized body, as well as the general ideas of the Renaissance and the Plà iade. The author examines the nature of the poetry produced by the Floral Games during the period, selecting certain poets from the circle for study. Many of the competing poets were students of the university, who after their departure from Toulouse spread abroad throughout France the interest in poetry they had acquired. This book is a valuable contribution to the history of the Floral Games, and provides a fresh interpretation of the part of Etienne Dolet's life that he spent at Toulouse. The author shows clearly the reasons for Dolet's failure to win a prize in the Floral Games in the contest of 1534, presenting to the judges ten Latin poems.
