The author was a minister who preached on the subject of slavery in a newly constructed church in 1850. This sparked controversy as the speeches were originally intended to encourage unity and denunciations of slavery were seen as inflammatory at the time. The author holds that the Bible condones slavery in certain forms, but the practice must not be used to degrade or brutalize enslaved people. The author is careful to define the nature of slavery as he sees it, including the distinction between voluntary and involuntary servitude. He asserts that the type of slavery practiced in the Southern United States at the time, while not ideal, did not preclude enslaved people from fulfilling their Christian duties, and may even have been a necessary condition for their spiritual development and path to salvation.
