Th.s little book is the fruit of study, reflection and teachings continued through twenty years. It would be hazardous for any one to claim originality in a department of literature which contains so many great works as sacred rhetoric. The most efl ectual disavowal of such pretensions will be to recite the titles of the books which I have read with most advantage, and which have contributed to my knowledge or opinions on this subject. If my readers are familiar with these treatises, they will probably find in them either the germs or the full forms of nearly all the ideas which I advance. The following treatises I have found exceedingly instructive: Aristotle s Rhetoric, Cicero, De Oratore. Horace, Epistle to the Pisos. Quinctilian, De I nstitutione Oratoria, Campbell s Philosophy of Rhetoric, -W hateley s Rhetoric. Vinet sH

Paperback. Etat : New. Print on Demand. This compelling study of sacred rhetoric, grounded in the history of preaching and theology, explores the nature and purpose of evangelical sermons. The author argues that true eloquence stems from the preacher's virtuous energy and adherence to the authority of God's word. In contrast to secular oratory, the sacred sermon aims not merely to persuade but to evoke spiritual action, urging the hearer to repentance, faith, and holiness. Through an examination of prominent figures and movements in the history of preaching, the author traces the evolution of this vital practice while emphasizing the importance of biblical exposition and the preacher's personal piety. The book's insights provide a valuable framework for understanding the power and significance of sacred rhetoric in the proclamation of the gospel.
