There is something tangible about the dynamo. Its movement, and the applied power are apparent. The lamp glows, and its action is appreciable, but the transformer remains to them an uncanny mystery.

So too the average electrician whose training has long accustomed him to the management and application of the electric current, finds in the transformer as a rule, more points regarding which his mind is hazy and uncertain, than in any other one piece of apparatus with which he has to deal.
