This book focuses on the journals written during the many expeditions of famed explorer and missionary David Livingstone, particularly his final Zambezi expedition from 1858-1864. The explorer's later writings reveal a profound sadness not found in his earlier journals, perhaps due to the hardships he endured and the death of his wife. His main goal remained to bring Christianity to the African people, though his expeditions also yielded groundbreaking geographical discoveries. The missionary effort in Africa began as early as the 15th century with the Portuguese but gained more traction in the 19th with the formation of abolitionist groups denouncing the horrors of the slave trade. Though the slave trade was outlawed in many countries by the mid-19th century, it persisted in Africa under the guise of the Arab slave trade, which Livingstone spent much of his life trying to expose. The author includes excerpts from journals and travelogues penned by many explorers who travelled throughout Africa in the mid-to-late 1800s, giving readers a well-rounded perspective on this era of African history and providing the backdrop for Livingstone's lifelong work.
