This book chronicles the historical development of the doctrine of infant salvation through analysis of records produced by church leaders, councils, and the Reformation movement, from the earliest days of Christianity to the 18th century. The author traces the evolution of the doctrine from its harsh judgment that unbaptized infants were doomed to eternal punishment, through the medieval mitigation that assigned them only a mild punishment, to Protestant affirmations of eventual salvation for all infants dying in infancy. These deliberations were influenced by changing views of baptism, the concept of the church, and the nature of original sin. The author concludes that while the doctrine was shaped by the prevailing ecclesiastical climate of each era, it ultimately reflects a human desire to reconcile the harshness of the doctrine of eternal punishment for infants with a loving and merciful God.
