Synopsis

Excerpt from The Babylonian Conception of Heaven and Hell

No consecutive account of the Babylonian religion can as yet be given, nor will it for many years come within the range of possibilities to achieve it. Abundant fragments of Babylonian religious and mythological literature have indeed been brought to light by the excavations of the last few years, and by dint of strenuous efforts a large proportion has been classified and deciphered. But extending as they do over a period of more than three thousand years it is in comparatively few cases that these fragments can be set in chronological order. The preservation of most of the religious texts known to us is due to the collecting zeal of the Assyrian king Asurbanipal (668-626 B.C.) at whose command copies of the literary monuments of Babylonia were made on clay tablets by the royal scribes.

Paperback. Etat : New. Print on Demand. This book examines the ancient Babylonian beliefs regarding the afterlife, drawing upon cuneiform texts and archaeological evidence. The author explores the Babylonian concept of the underworld known as Aralu, described as a gloomy realm presided over by the goddess Erishkigal and her consort Nergal. The book discusses the rituals and practices associated with death and burial, including funeral dirges, libations, and offerings to the dead. It also examines the Babylonian notion of a paradise or "Island of the Blessed," accessible only to certain individuals and associated with the healing waters of life and the magic plant that grants eternal youth. Through an analysis of mythological fragments, the author sheds light on the Babylonian understanding of the nature of death, the fate of the soul, and the hope for a blissful existence beyond the grave. This book offers valuable insights into the rich and complex religious beliefs of ancient Babylonia and their enduring influence on Western thought. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book. print-on-demand item. N° de réf. du vendeur 9781331849780_0
