Synopsis

Explore how national church ceremonies can reflect Catholic principles within Western tradition.

A thoughtful, historical look at how English ceremonial life fits into a broader Catholic heritage.

This volume collects Vernon Staley’s analysis of how Anglican and English ceremonial practices relate to broader Western liturgical traditions. It examines the roots of national ceremonies, the rights of national churches to shape their own rites, and how ceremonial variety has long existed alongside shared Catholic principles.

Through historical references and careful argument, the book considers topics from the English Reformation to the development of Lent and the use of canticles, offering a clear view of ceremonial changes, debates, and continuities. It aims to ground practical liturgical decisions in sound precedent and scholarly inquiry.

  • Arguments that national variations can coexist with Catholic principles
  • Historical discussion of the English Church’s ceremonial reforms since the Reformation
  • Analysis of key liturgical questions, such as Lent, Te Deum, and Benedicite usage
  • Context for readers interested in the history and practice of Western liturgy

Ideal for readers of liturgy, church history, and colleagues seeking a thoughtful treatment of how ceremonial life intersects with Catholic identity.

Présentation de l'éditeur

This book was originally published prior to 1923, and represents a reproduction of an important historical work, maintaining the same format as the original work. While some publishers have opted to apply OCR (optical character recognition) technology to the process, we believe this leads to sub-optimal results (frequent typographical errors, strange characters and confusing formatting) and does not adequately preserve the historical character of the original artifact. We believe this work is culturally important in its original archival form. While we strive to adequately clean and digitally enhance the original work, there are occasionally instances where imperfections such as blurred or missing pages, poor pictures or errant marks may have been introduced due to either the quality of the original work or the scanning process itself. Despite these occasional imperfections, we have brought it back into print as part of our ongoing global book preservation commitment, providing customers with access to the best possible historical reprints. We appreciate your understanding of these occasional imperfections, and sincerely hope you enjoy seeing the book in a format as close as possible to that intended by the original publisher.

Excerpt from Liturgical Studies

With one exception, the following articles have appeared during the last five years in the columns of The Guardian and of The Church Times. Through the courtesy of the Editors of these papers, I am enabled to present them to the public collected in one volume. This has been done at the suggestion of Dr. John Dowden, Bishop of Edinburgh, to whom I am indebted for much kindness and encouragement in the pursuit of studies in Liturgy. The fourth essay on "The Origin of Saints' Days" has not hitherto appeared in print.
