Paperback. Etat : New. Print on Demand. This book provides a detailed and fully referenced history of the church at Luton, Bedfordshire, that dates back to the very earliest times of Christianity's arrival in the country. The author shows that this was probably one of the first centers of Christianity in the Midlands and provides evidence that a monastery was likely established at, or very near to Luton during the 7th century. The history of the subsequent church buildings on the site is traced, and the book also provides detailed biographies of the rectors and vicars instituted to the church from the 12th century onwards. The volume concludes with a detailed history of the church's bells, and an appendix that provides a comprehensive listing of charitable donations made to the church from 1548 to 1903. Beyond its local interest, the book is also valuable for the light it sheds on the early development of Christianity in England and the role of monasteries in that process.
