Synopsis

How ancient rituals shaped today’s celebrations

This book explains how early nature worship and Christian faith merged to form the festivals and saints’ days we still observe. It shows why many customs survive, even when their original meanings are forgotten, and how medieval processions, plays, and pageants reflected a blend of old beliefs with new devotion. The author traces examples from Europe and beyond, linking ancient symbols to modern rites. By comparing different traditions, the book reveals a shared history of celebration, devotion, and community life that spans centuries.

  • Clear explanations of how pagan origins influenced Christian festivals
  • Stories of processions, plays, and other pageantry from medieval and early modern times
  • Global examples, including Spain, Italy, and across Europe, with notes on how customs endure
  • Accessible discussion of symbols, colors, and everyday practices that shaped communal life
Ideal for readers of folklore, church history, and cultural traditions who want a concise, readable overview of how old beliefs survive in today’s celebrations.

Présentation de l'éditeur

Excerpt from Festivals, Holy Days, and Saints' Days: A Study in Origins and Survivals in Church Ceremonies Secular Customs

Many great scholars, both archaeologists and anthropologists, have discussed the obscurities surrounding the origin of Festivals.

The idea of this little book is not to dogmatize, but rather to note practices still existing, or but lately obsolete, to trace their probable connexion with those of the Middle Ages, and where a pre-Christian connexion can be traced, to mention it with due reserve.

In some cases, bygone ceremonies will be described for the sake of the light they throw on many still surviving amongst us. English ceremonies will be first regarded, and then such Continental or Eastern rites as can be compared with those of the English people, indicating a similar origin. The endeavour will be to select those which deserve note by their typical character, but not to attempt to cover such a huge field as the description of the Catholic ceremonies in all countries must necessarily involve.
