Paperback. Etat : New. Print on Demand. This book is a crucial addition to the study of the Early English Reformers. It includes three early English versions of the Lay Folks Catechism, offering insight into the efforts of three of the earliest English Reformers: John Peckham, John de Thoresby, and John Wyclif. Peckham's Constitutions of 1281 aimed to improve the education and discipline of the clergy and laity, and we see that Thoresby followed in his footsteps with the publication of his Lay Folks Catechism in 1357. Wyclif then made an expanded version of Thoresby's text, and this book offers an overview of the stark differences in their dialects. We see not only the religious but also the linguistic shifts occurring in this era, and the different strategies of the three authors in bringing their reforms to light. This book is significant as it provides valuable material for understanding the development of religious and language reform in medieval England.
