Excerpt from Eleven Years in Ceylon, Vol. 1 of 2: Comprising Sketches of the Field Sports and Natural History of That Colony, and an Account of Its History and Antiquities
I have placed last in this list of evils the social and moral condition of the people,1t as in my Opinion it has been proved to be the least impor tant of the causes which, prior to 1833, prevented the improvement of Ceylon; for as soon as our arbitrary rule was abandoned, the system of tax ation changed, and the administration of the law reformed, from that time spontaneous improvement appeared to commence in the character and con dition of the people. If the fruits now forming are not as great and as rapidly matured as might be expected from the buds and blossoms already put forth, I can have no hesitation in awarding the blame of any serious check which may occur, to the Government, and not to any fault either in the capacity or disposition of the people, or in the structure of society.

Paperback. Etat : New. Print on Demand. This book presents a historical account of the British in Ceylon, from their initial embassy to the Kandian King in 1763 to their eventual assumption of governorship in 1796 and the subsequent decades of British rule. The author draws on native annals and archaeological evidence to provide a comprehensive view of Ceylon's past, including its ancient institutions and succession of native kings. The book explores the complex relationship between the British and the Kandyan monarchy, detailing the failed embassy of 1763, the eventual British takeover of the maritime provinces, and the bloody conflicts that ensued. The author also examines the social and economic reforms implemented by the British, including the abolition of compulsory labor and the introduction of a new legal system. This book offers a valuable perspective on the history of British colonialism in Ceylon and its lasting impact on the island nation.
