Paperback. Etat : New. Print on Demand. This book examines the transformation of verse from quantitative to accentual systems, from classical antiquity to the Middle Ages. The author argues that the later rhythms grew out of quantitative verse by a gradual and natural process, not as a separate importation. Verse forms from Greek, Latin, French, and English works are analyzed and compared to illustrate the change, along with the concurrent influence of syllabic principles and the role of music and church ritual of the time. The examples in this text demonstrate how a keen ear for prosody, a nice perception of quantities, may have been something of a rarity even among the upper classes in the Augustan age and became even less so in succeeding centuries. At the same time, the elements that survived were not the result of a happy chance, but an essential condition of the verse. The author traces these essential conditions through the works of various poets and periods, illuminating the complex evolution of verse forms we use today.
